We are the students of S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences, Kolkata. We are proud to be the students of an institution named after the great scientist Prof. Satyendra Nath Bose and take the opportunity to call ourselves 'Bosons', scientifically bearing a meaning that we stay united in a single 'state' (if we want). In our common use, we refer to our institute as 'Centre'. To carry on the different kinds of students' activities in an organized way, the 'student body' as a whole is united under the identity of 'SNB Students'. The activities of SNB Students are independent of the official activities related to our Centre. Different 'Activity Wings', namely Academia and Discussion, Sports, Cultural, Social, and Magazine, are created within 'SNB Students' to organize classified activities under the hood of that wing. A handful of active members in various wings come forward to exchange their ideas to organize any general event or deal with common or particular issues faced by the students.
The activities related to the publication of student magazines are conducted by the Magazine
Wing under the SNB Students. Magazines are viewed as a medium for expressing creativity
within the mind. In a greater sense, they play a significant role as the developing and
nourishing medium of wonderful ideas and thereby guiding the perception of people in a
manner of properly manifesting the thoughts lurking in them.
The first edition of the wall magazine, Chharpatra-Utsa was published in August 2017. A
large painting was made and was given the name Utsa (the name was suggested by Monalisa
Singh Roy, selected among a large number of suggestions from the students). The written
contributions were published separately under the name Chharpatra (a pre-selected name),
alongside the painting. After a two-year-long gap, the magazine was revived in October 2019,
and the two previous names were merged, hence, the 'unorthodox' name of the magazine!
Currently, the third edition of Chharpatra-Utsa is out. This one is published as a web
magazine in place of its usual form as an effect of the ongoing pandemic.

We acknowledge ALL the members (that includes alumni) of our SNB Students family who have actively taken part in the publication of all the editions of the Chharpatra-Utsa. We thank and congratulate ALL who have contributed and enriched the magazine.
A pandemic is considered to be over when a cure is available. People are talking about
vaccines, low 'R' value, etc. However, like a war has to be won inside the mind before the
battlefield, the pandemic can end in the minds before a cure is available in medical terms.
Simply, as soon as we learn to live up to the situation, it is a cure - not as easy as being said,
of course! As the pandemic days are passing by, the halted and forgotten life is trying to get
back into tracks again; a new normal is emerging slowly. Another season of Sharadiya
festival has arrived, though not in the usual form - as expected. Nevertheless, people are
trying to act as normal as possible! Not to mention that the experience of the pandemic will
undoubtedly vary from person to person, depending on his/her position in the society in terms
of profession, economical stability, and also, most interestingly, control over emotions! We
have seen that the pandemic has not caused only health effects, but also has caused a broader
variety of effects if the lives of all kinds of people are observed closely. The collateral
damage – in several forms, caused by the pandemic, by no means could be considered
insignificant.
Always the wonderful thing is to let the constructive ideas keep going in every situation in
whatever possible way. This thought makes the way for the third edition of the wall magazine
Chharpatra-Utsa, to publish on the web, and we have selected the occasion of Sharadotsav
for this. It is obvious to thematize a magazine by the current day scenario, where the 'Life
during COVID pandemic' comes in. The second theme, 'Buddhirupena-women in science'
comes from the concept that Mother Durga, along with her other forms, has also incarnated
herself as buddhi, implying knowledge, and thus, linked with woman empowerment in
science. Finally, invariably enough, Sharodatsav has been kept as a general theme.
Thoughtful writings, innovative illustrations and drawings, attractive photographs, around the
central themes have been received from our friends for publication. As this version is a digital
one, it has been possible to publish meaningful short videos as well. We hope that the
magazine will be accepted and loved by our SNB Students' family members.
